RCWIH BioBank Tissue Microarrays

Tissue microarrays (TMAs) represent powerful tools for the identification and validation of molecular targets with clinical significance, and offer researchers many advantages including:
  • Power to analyze multiple clinical specimens or subjects on a single slide
  • Improved ability to make direct sample-to-sample comparisons by eliminating experimental variability associated with staining procedures
  • Reduced costs for antibodies and immunohistochemical reagents
  • Efficient use of laboratory resources with reduced time required for slide processing
  • Conservation of precious clinical specimens

RCWIH BioBank TMAs are constructed from our specimen archive which contains more than 1500 paraformaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded (PFPE) tissue blocks, each accompanied by a detailed clinical profile. BioBank TMAs are available in 112 x 1mm core array, or 135 x 1mm core array formats and are accompanied by a detailed TMA map and comprehensive clinical report for all samples. Prepared slides are available from pre-designed BioBank TMAs, or alternatively custom-built TMAs are available upon request.

For additional information regarding BioBank TMAs please contact our office.

TMA#1: Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and Preeclampsia (PET) Aarray

  • 112 x 1mm placental (villous tissue) cores
  • 4 x 1mm beacon cores (prepared from PFPE umbilical cord tissue) for TMA orientation
  • 28 unique subjects represented:
    • 8 IUGR
    • 8 PET (including 3 cases with HELLP syndrome)
    • 6 preterm controls
    • 6 term controls
  • 4 replicate placental tissue cores per subject
  • Accompanied by a comprehensive clinical summary for each subject
    • All clinical data reviewed and audited by a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist with the Mount Sinai Hospital Special Pregnancy Program
  • Accompanied by findings from the pathological evaluation of the complete placenta
    • Evaluations are conducted by a Perinatal Pathologist with the Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

TMA#2: Gestational Age Profile Array

  • 135 x 1mm placental (villous tissue) cores
  • 6 x 1mm beacon cores (prepared from PFPE umbilical cord tissue) for TMA orientation
  • gestational ages from 4 weeks to 37+ weeks represented
  • 6 replicate placental tissue cores per subject (each gestational age is represented by one unique subject)
